BACKGROUND: Chagas disease and leishmaniasis affect a significant portion of the Latin American population and still lack efficient treatments. In this context, natural products emerge as promising compounds for developing more effective therapies, aiming to mitigate side effects and drug resistance. Notably, species from the Amaryllidaceae family emerge as potential reservoirs of antiparasitic agents due to the presence of diverse biologically active alkaloids. PURPOSE: To assess the anti-Trypanosoma cruzi and anti-Leishmania infantum activity of five isolated alkaloids from Hippeastrum aulicum Herb. (Amaryllidaceae) against different life stages of the parasites using in silico and in vitro assays. Furthermore, molecular docking was employed to evaluate the interaction of the most active alkaloids. METHODS: Five natural isoquinoline alkaloids isolated in suitable quantities for in vitro testing underwent preliminary in silico analysis to predict their potential efficacy against Trypanosoma cruzi (amastigote and trypomastigote forms) and Leishmania infantum (amastigote and promastigote forms). The in vitro antiparasitic activity and mammalian cytotoxicity were investigated with a subsequent comparison of both analysis (in silico and in vitro) findings. Additionally, this study employed the molecular docking technique, utilizing cruzain (T. cruzi) and sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51, L. infantum) as crucial biological targets for parasite survival, specifically focusing on compounds that exhibited promising activities against both parasites. RESULTS: Through computational techniques, it was identified that the alkaloids haemanthamine (1) and lycorine (8) were the most active against T. cruzi (amastigote and trypomastigote) and L. infantum (amastigote and promastigote), while also revealing unprecedented activity of alkaloid 7­methoxy-O-methyllycorenine (6). The in vitro analysis confirmed the in silico tests, in which compound 1 presented the best activities against the promastigote and amastigote forms of L. infantum with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) 0.6 µM and 1.78 µM, respectively. Compound 8 exhibited significant activity against the amastigote form of T. cruzi (IC50 7.70 µM), and compound 6 demonstrated activity against the trypomastigote forms of T. cruzi and amastigote of L. infantum, with IC50 values of 89.55 and 86.12 µM, respectively. Molecular docking analyses indicated that alkaloids 1 and 8 exhibited superior interaction energies compared to the inhibitors. CONCLUSION: The hitherto unreported potential of compound 6 against T. cruzi trypomastigotes and L. infantum amastigotes is now brought to the forefront. Furthermore, the acquired dataset signifies that the isolated alkaloids 1 and 8 from H. aulicum might serve as prototypes for subsequent structural refinements aimed at the exploration of novel leads against both T. cruzi and L. infantum parasites.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) enables three-dimensional reconstruction of the functional blood vessels in the retina. Therefore, it enables the quantification of 3D retinal vessel parameters such as surface area and vessel volume. In spite of the widespread use of OCTA, no representative volume-rendered vessel volume (VV) data are published to date. In this study, OCTA 3 × 3 mm macular cubes were processed with volume-rendering techniques to measure VV in 203 eyes from 107 healthy volunteers. Generalized linear models (GLM) were constructed to assess the impact of age, gender, visual acuity (VA), spherical equivalent (SE), and axial length (AL) on VV. Overall mean VV was 0.23 ± 0.05mm3. Age and axial length showed a negative correlation with VV. However, GLM model analysis found that AL exerted the most pronounced influence on VV. No statistically significant associations were identified between gender or between left and right eyes. This is the first study to assess 3D OCTA VV and its naturally occurring variations in a large series of healthy subjects. It offers novel insights into the characterization of normal retinal vascular anatomy in healthy individuals, contributing to a valuable reference for future research in this field.

Background: Docetaxel remains the standard treatment for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). However, resistance frequently emerges as a result of hyperactivation of the PI3K/AKT and the MEK/ERK pathways. Therefore, the inhibition of these pathways presents a potential therapeutic approach. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of simultaneous inhibition of the PI3K/AKT and MEK/ERK pathways in docetaxel-resistant mCRPC, both in vitro and in vivo. Methods: Docetaxel-sensitive and docetaxel-resistant mCRPC cells were treated with selumetinib (MEK1/2 inhibitor), AZD8186 (PI3Kß/δ inhibitor) and capivasertib (pan-AKT inhibitor) alone and in combination. Efficacy and toxicity of selumetinib+AZD8186 were tested in docetaxel-resistant xenograft mice. CRISPR-Cas9 generated a PTEN-knockdown docetaxel-resistant cell model. Changes in phosphorylation of AKT, ERK and downstream targets were analyzed by Western blot. Antiapoptotic adaptations after treatments were detected by dynamic BH3 profiling. Results: PI3K/AKT and MEK/ERK pathways were hyperactivated in PTEN-wild-type (wt) docetaxel-resistant cells. Selumetinib+AZD8186 decreased cell proliferation and increased apoptosis in PTEN-wt docetaxel-resistant cells. This observation was further confirmed in vivo, where docetaxel-resistant xenograft mice treated with selumetinib+AZD8186 exhibited reduced tumor growth without additional toxicity. Conclusion: Our findings on the activity of selumetinib+AZD8186 in PTEN-wt cells and in docetaxel-resistant xenograft mice provide an excellent rationale for a novel therapeutic strategy for PTEN-wt mCRPC patients resistant to docetaxel, in whom, unlike PTEN-loss patients, a clinical benefit of treatment with single-agent PI3K and AKT inhibitors has not been demonstrated. A phase I-II trial of this promising combination is warranted.

Currently, basketball teams use inertial devices for monitoring external and internal workload demands during training and competitions. However, the intensity thresholds preset by device manufacturers are generic and not adapted for specific sports (e.g., basketball) and players' positions (e.g., guards, forwards, and centers). Using universal intensity thresholds may lead to failure in accurately capturing the true external load faced by players in different positions. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify external load demands based on playing positions and establish different intensity thresholds based on match demands in order to have specific reference values for teams belonging to the highest competitive level of Spanish basketball. Professional male players (n = 68) from the Spanish ACB league were monitored during preseason official games. Three specific positions were used to group the players: guards, forwards, and centers. Speed, accelerations, decelerations, impacts/min, and player load/min were collected via inertial devices. Two-step clustering and k-means clustering categorized load metrics into intensity zones for guards, forwards, and centers. Guards covered more distance at high speeds (12.72-17.50 km/h) than forwards and centers (p < 0.001). Centers experienced the most impacts/min (p < 0.001). Guards exhibited greater accelerations/decelerations, albeit mostly low magnitude (p < 0.001). K-means clustering allowed the setting of five zones revealing additional thresholds. All positions showed differences in threshold values (p < 0.001). The findings provide insights into potential disparities in the external load during competition and help establish position-specific intensity thresholds for optimal monitoring in basketball. These data are highly applicable to the design of training tasks at the highest competitive level.

Ligand fishing, also described as affinity-based assay, represents a convenient and efficient approach to separate potential ligands from complex matrixes or chemical libraries. This approach contributes to the identification of lead compounds that can bind to a specific target. In the context of COVID-19, the search for novel therapeutic agents is crucial. Small molecule-based antiviral drugs, such as Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, have been described as potential candidates because they can inhibit RNA viruses. Among various SARS-CoV-2 proteins, Nsp3, Nsp4, and Nsp6 play a crucial role in the pathogenicity of the virus and are attractive targets for developing COVID-19 treatments. These proteins are responsible for the replication/transcription complex (RTC) within double-membrane vesicles (DMVs), and their inhibition disrupts the virus's infectious cycle. Herein, we have successfully expressed and immobilized the SARS-CoV-2 Nsp4 protein on magnetic beads (Nsp4-MBs) and employed a ligand fishing assay to screen a collection of ten Amaryllidaceae-based alkaloids and applied to Hippeastrum aulicum extract. Remarkably, four out of ten alkaloids, namely 2-α-7-dimethoxyhomolycorine (6), haemanthamine (5), albomaculine (8), and tazettine (9), exhibited selective affinities for Nsp4. Albomaculine (8) and haemanthamine (5) were also identified from extract by the affinity assay. These findings highlight the potential of these alkaloids as model compounds for future drug discovery studies aimed at developing therapeutic interventions against SARS-CoV-2 infections.

INTRODUCTION: The Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) has proposed new criteria for airflow limitation (AL) and recommends using these to interpret spirometry. The objective of this study was to explore the impact of the application of the AL GLI criteria in two well characterized GOLD-defined COPD cohorts. METHODS: COPD patients from the BODE (n=360) and the COPD History Assessment In SpaiN (CHAIN) cohorts (n=722) were enrolled and followed. Age, gender, pack-years history, BMI, dyspnea, lung function measurements, exercise capacity, BODE index, history of exacerbations and survival were recorded. CT-detected comorbidities were registered in the BODE cohort. The proportion of subjects without AL by GLI criteria was determined in each cohort. The clinical, CT-detected comorbidity, and overall survival of these patients were evaluated. RESULTS: In total, 18% of the BODE and 15% of the CHAIN cohort did not meet GLI AL criteria. In the BODE and CHAIN cohorts respectively, these patients had a high clinical burden (BODE≥3: 9% and 20%; mMRC≥2: 16% and 45%; exacerbations in the previous year: 31% and 9%; 6MWD<350m: 15% and 19%, respectively), and a similar prevalence of CT-diagnosed comorbidities compared with those with GLI AL. They also had a higher rate of long-term mortality - 33% and 22% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: An important proportion of patients from 2 GOLD-defined COPD cohorts did not meet GLI AL criteria at enrolment, although they had a significant burden of disease. Caution must be taken when applying the GLI AL criteria in clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Lebrikizumab and dupilumab are monoclonal antibodies approved for treating moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD). Both have demonstrated efficacy and safety over the 16-week SOLOs and ADvocate trials. However, AD is a chronic and relapsing inflammatory disease, and the long-term maintenance of efficacy is critical for achieving disease control from the perspective of patients, physicians, and regulatory agencies. This study aims to compare the long-term efficacy and safety of lebrikizumab every 4 weeks (Q4W) and dupilumab every week or every 2 weeks (QW/Q2W) among adult patients who have achieved treatment efficacy following the induction period of 16 weeks. METHODS: Lebrikizumab's efficacy was assessed using individual patient data (IPD) from the ADvocate 1 and 2 monotherapy trials. Dupilumab's efficacy was evaluated using aggregate data from the adult-exclusive SOLO-CONTINUE trial. Due to the absence of a common comparator trial arm, we employed an unanchored matching-adjusted indirect comparison (MAIC), a robust methodology widely accepted by health technology assessment (HTA) agencies. This re-weights ADvocate IPD to align with SOLO-CONTINUE's prognostic factors and effect modifiers. We compared lebrikizumab's adjusted outcomes with dupilumab outcomes at week 52, focusing on 75% improvement in the Eczema Area and Severity Index from baseline (EASI-75), Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA) score of 0 or 1, and overall adverse event (AE) rates. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to test various combinations of matching variables. RESULTS: Adults on lebrikizumab Q4W were more likely to maintain IGA 0/1 through the 36-week maintenance period (weeks 16-52) compared with those on dupilumab QW/Q2W [risk ratio (RR) 1.334; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.74; p = 0.035]. Both treatments demonstrated comparable efficacy in terms of EASI-75 maintenance (RR 0.937; 95% CI 0.78-1.13; p = 0.490) and similar AE rates (RR 1.052; 95% CI 0.90-1.23; p = 0.526). Sensitivity analyses substantiated these findings. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that lebrikizumab Q4W may provide equal or superior long-term maintenance of efficacy measured with EASI-75 and IGA 0/1 compared with dupilumab QW/Q2W, with the advantage of requiring less frequent doses.

La práctica deportiva y la Inteligencia Emocional en jóvenes se están convirtiendo en constructos muy estudiados en los últimos años. La evidencia disponible revela que, tanto la práctica deportiva como la Inteligencia Emocional, producen beneficios físicos y psicológicos. No obstante, los estudios que analizan la relación entre Inteligencia Emocional y práctica deportiva aún siguen siendo escasos. El objetivo de este estudio se centró en verificar si existe algún tipo de relación entre ambas variables mediante la revisión del estado de la cuestión en este ámbito, permitiendo de esta manera abrir nuevas líneas de investigación sobre esta temática. Se seleccionaron tres bases de datos (WOS, Scopus y PubMed) para la extracción de documentos científicos, analizando los documentos obtenidos con la metodología PRISMA y un análisis de la calidad de la muestra final obtenida. Finalmente fueron revisados 38 artículos. Además, se llevó a cabo una evaluación del contenido de los artículos, realizando un análisis descriptivo de la información mediante el uso de tablas de contingencia y sus índices estadísticos. Los resultados, en concordancia con la literatura examinada, reflejaron la existencia de una asociación positiva entre la Inteligencia Emocional y la práctica deportiva. (AU)


The practice of sports and emotional intelligence in young people have become very much studied constructs in recent years. The aim of this study focused on verifying whether there is any kind of relationship between the two variables by reviewing the state of the art in this field, thus allowing new lines of research to be opened up on this subject. Three databases (WOS, Scopus, and PubMed) were selected for the extraction of scientific documents, analyzing the documents obtained with the PRISMA methodology and an analysis of the quality of the final sample obtained, finally 38 articles were selected. An analysis of the content of the articles was carried out and a descriptive analysis of the information was performed using comparative tables and their statistical indices. The results showed the existence of a positive association between emotional intelligence and sports practice. (AU)


A prática do desporto e a inteligência emocional nos jovens tornaram-se trmas muito estudadas nos últimos anos. O objectivo deste estudo centrou-se em verificar se existe algum tipo de relação entre as duas variáveis através da revisão do estado da arte neste campo, permitindo assim a abertura de novas linhas de investigação sobre este assunto. Foram seleccionadas três bases de dados (WOS, Scopus e PubMed) para a extracção de documentos científicos, analisando os documentos obtidos com a metodologia PRISMA e uma análise da qualidade da amostra final obtida, onde foram incluidos 38 artigos. Foi realizada uma análise do conteúdo dos artigos e uma análise descritiva da informação, utilizando tabelas de comparação e os seus índices estatísticos. Os resultados mostraram a existência de uma associação positiva entre a inteligência emocional e a prática desportiva. (AU)

Lung cancer (LC) is the leading cause of cancer deaths, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can increase LC risk. Metallomics may provide insights into both of these tobacco-related diseases and their shared etiology. We conducted an observational study of 191 human serum samples, including those of healthy controls, LC patients, COPD patients, and patients with both COPD and LC. We found 18 elements (V, Al, As, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, Se, W, Mo, Sb, Pb, Tl, Cr, Mg, Ni, and U) in these samples. In addition, we evaluated the elemental profiles of COPD cases of varying severity. The ratios and associations between the elements were also studied as possible signatures of the diseases. COPD severity and LC have a significant impact on the elemental composition of human serum. The severity of COPD was found to reduce the serum concentrations of As, Cd, and Tl and increased the serum concentrations of Mn and Sb compared with healthy control samples, while LC was found to increase Al, As, Mn, and Pb concentrations. This study provides new insights into the effects of LC and COPD on the human serum elemental profile that will pave the way for the potential use of elements as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis. It also sheds light on the potential link between the two diseases, i.e., the evolution of COPD to LC.

Background: Plasma cell leukemia (PCL) is an aggressive and rare form of plasma cell dyscrasia characterized by peripheral blood expression, poor prognosis, and high relapse rates. Extramedullary plasmacytomas are common in this entity and can affect various organs and soft tissues. Chimeric antigen receptor-T-cell (CAR-T) therapy is a novel immunotherapy for hematological malignancies with promising results. However, it is not indicated for PCL, and experience in this condition is limited. This case is a rare presentation of bilateral orbital plasmacytomas after CAR-T therapy in a patient with PCL history. Case presentation: We present the case of a 51-year-old female patient with a history of previous primary PCL treated with CAR-T therapy achieving complete response and without evidence of systemic progression. Six months after the treatment, she developed subacute proptosis and ptosis on the left eye.An orbital CT scan was performed and showed an orbital tumor in both eyes. A surgical biopsy with histological examination revealed plasma cells, consistent with a plasmacytoma. PET-CT and MRI confirmed the presence of tumors in both orbits. The patient was treated with dexamethasone and chemotherapy along with palliative radiation therapy to the left orbit which had a good response. Conclusion: Orbital involvement in multiple myeloma and PCL is rare, with plasmacytomas being more common in other parts of the body. In this report, we present a case of a patient with PCL history, treated with multiple therapeutic lines including CAR-T therapy, who presented bilateral orbital plasmacytomas as the first sign of extramedullary progression after the treatment. This case should be considered by specialist to be aware that the orbits are a possible location of extramedullary progression.

El propósito de este estudio fue diseñar y validar un instrumento para la evaluación del conocimiento declarativo y procedimental en un deporte de invasión como el baloncesto en el contexto escolar. En el proceso de validación participaron 15 jueces expertos. El instrumento estuvo formado por 34 ítems distribuidos en dos bloques, declarativo y procedimental. Responde al siguiente tipo de preguntas: ¿Qué es?, ¿Sirve para?, ¿Qué se consigue?, ¿Cuál es? y ¿Cómo se realiza? La validez de contenido se calculó mediante el coeficiente V de Aiken y sus intervalos de confianza. Para la consistencia interna se empleó el coeficiente α de Cronbach. Ninguna de las preguntas que componen el test de conocimiento declarativo y procedimental fue eliminada al superar el valor crítico exacto (V≥.74). La consistencia interna de las preguntas fue excelente (α=.95). Por tanto, el instrumento es válido y fiable para la evaluación del conocimiento en el baloncesto escolar. (AU)


The purpose of this study has been the design and validation of an instrument for the evaluation of declarative and procedural knowledge in an invasion sport such as basketball in the school context. 15 expert judges participated in the validation process. The instrument consisted of 34 items distributed in two blocks, declarative and procedural. Answers the following type of questions: Is it useful for?, What is it ?, What is achieved ?, Which one is it? In addition, how is it done? Content validity was calculated using Aiken's V coefficient and its confidence intervals. Cronbach's α coefficient was used for internal consistency. None of the questions that make up the declarative and procedural knowledge test were eliminated by exceeding the exact critical value (V≥.74). The internal consistency of the questions was excellent (α=.95). Therefore, the instrument is valid and reliable for the evaluation of knowledge in school basketball. (AU)

El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar el proceso de planificación y toma de decisiones de los entrenadores españoles de fútbol en función variables sociodemográficas, de formación y del contexto del equipo. A través de un diseño descriptivo, comparativo y transversal, se administraron los cuestionarios de estilos de decisión y planificación en el deporte a una muestra de 315 de entrenadores de fútbol en activo. Se analizó la validez y fiabilidad de las escalas empleadas y se realizó un análisis correlacional entre los factores de cada escala. Los resultados indican que los entrenadores puntúan más alto la toma de decisiones democráticas (M= 3,77 ±,74) y la planificación flexible (M= 4,04 ±,69). De igual modo, se encontraron correlaciones entre la toma de decisiones y planificación siendo los pares: democrática-flexible y autoritaria-rígida. También se encontraron diferencias significativas en relación a la edad, características del equipo, formación universitaria y deportiva. (AU)


The objective of this research is to analyse the planning and decision-making process of Spanish football coaches according to socio-demographic, educational and team context variables. Using a descriptive, comparative and cross-sectional design, the questionnaires on decision-making and planning styles in sport were administered to a sample of 315 active football coaches. The validity and reliability of the scales used were analysed and a correlational analysis was carried out between the factors of each scale. The results indicate that coaches scored democratic decision-making (M= 3.77 ±.74) and flexible planning (M= 4.04 ±.69) higher. Similarly, correlations were found between decision-making and planning with the pairs being democratic-flexible and authoritarian-rigid. Significant differences were also found in relation to age, team characteristics, university and sports training. (AU)


O objectivo desta investigação era analisar o processo de planeamento e tomada de decisões dos treinadores espanhóis de futebol de acordo com variáveis sociodemográficas, educacionais e de contexto de equipa. Através de um desenho descritivo, comparativo e transversal, os questionários de estilos de decisão e planeamento no desporto foram administrados a uma amostra de 315 treinadores de futebol activos. A validade e fiabilidade das escalas utilizadas foram analisadas e foi efectuada uma análise correlacional entre os factores de cada escala. Os resultados indicam que os treinadores pontuaram a tomada de decisão democrática (M= 3,77 ±,74) e o planeamento flexível (M= 4,04 ±,69) mais alto. Do mesmo modo, foram encontradas correlações entre a tomada de decisões e o planeamento, sendo os pares democrático-flexível e autoritário-rígido. Foram também encontradas diferenças significativas em relação à idade, características da equipa, formação universitária e desportiva. (AU)

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of machine learning (ML) techniques applied to radiomic features extracted from OCT and OCT angiography (OCTA) images for diabetes mellitus (DM), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and referable DR (R-DR) diagnosis. Design: Cross-sectional analysis of a retinal image dataset from a previous prospective OCTA study (ClinicalTrials.govNCT03422965). Participants: Patients with type 1 DM and controls included in the progenitor study. Methods: Radiomic features were extracted from fundus retinographies, OCT, and OCTA images in each study eye. Logistic regression, linear discriminant analysis, support vector classifier (SVC)-linear, SVC-radial basis function, and random forest models were created to evaluate their diagnostic accuracy for DM, DR, and R-DR diagnosis in all image types. Main Outcome Measures: Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) mean and standard deviation for each ML model and each individual and combined image types. Results: A dataset of 726 eyes (439 individuals) were included. For DM diagnosis, the greatest AUC was observed for OCT (0.82, 0.03). For DR detection, the greatest AUC was observed for OCTA (0.77, 0.03), especially in the 3 × 3 mm superficial capillary plexus OCTA scan (0.76, 0.04). For R-DR diagnosis, the greatest AUC was observed for OCTA (0.87, 0.12) and the deep capillary plexus OCTA scan (0.86, 0.08). The addition of clinical variables (age, sex, etc.) improved most models AUC for DM, DR and R-DR diagnosis. The performance of the models was similar in unilateral and bilateral eyes image datasets. Conclusions: Radiomics extracted from OCT and OCTA images allow identification of patients with DM, DR, and R-DR using standard ML classifiers. OCT was the best test for DM diagnosis, OCTA for DR and R-DR diagnosis and the addition of clinical variables improved most models. This pioneer study demonstrates that radiomics-based ML techniques applied to OCT and OCTA images may be an option for DR screening in patients with type 1 DM. Sex-biased analyses still remain as one of the biggest limitations to obtain universal conclusions. In biomedicine, the majority of experimental analyses and a significant amount of patient-derived cohort studies exclusively included males. In nutritional and molecular medicine, sex-influence is also frequently underrated, even considering maternal-inherited organelles such as mitochondria. We herein illustrate with in-house original data examples of how sex influences mitochondrial homeostasis, review these topics and highlight the consequences of biasing scientific analyses excluding females as differentiated entities from males.

OBJECTIVE: This article aims to discuss the multidisciplinary approach required in the treatment of cases of impaction and ankylosis of permanent teeth, associated with a history of trauma, considering the psychological state of the child and family when faced with a traumatic case of bullying, by reporting the complex treatment of a central incisor needing to be orthodontically moved across the midline. CONCLUSION: This clinical case was a major challenge, which included complex multidisciplinary procedures. Results and stability after 26 months of retention indicated successful orthodontic space closure of two maxillary teeth, without the use of implants or prostheses, in an adolescent patient who had a history of dental trauma, alveolar bone loss, and an uncertain initial prognosis.

Creative strategies allow students to feel ownership of their learning, fostering interest and motivation towards sports and educational contexts. This study aimed to compare different psychological variables after applying creative and traditional sessions of recreational figure roller-skating. Twelve school-age female skaters (9.00 ± 1.09 years old) participated in this pilot study. They performed two sessions: (1) a creative session (where participants created their own choreography) and (2) a traditional session (where participants followed the choreography created by the sports professional). In the creative session, participants created their choreographies without instructions. The basic psychological needs scale, the measure of intentionality to be physically active (sports adherence) and the games and emotions scale were administered after each session. The creative intervention led to a higher satisfaction of the needs of perceived competence (p-value = 0.04; effect size = 0.59), social relationships (p-value = 0.03; effect size = 0.62) and adherence to figure roller-skating (p-value = 0.02; effect size = 0.69), compared to the traditional intervention in female skaters. Participants showed significantly more humor and less surprise in the creative session than in the traditional session. This greater satisfaction with perceived competence and social relationships could translate into greater adherence to sports.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) have been shown to reduce medication errors. However, they are underused because of different challenges. One approach to improve CDSS is to use ontologies instead of relational databases. The primary aim was to design and develop OntoPharma, an ontology based CDSS to reduce medication prescribing errors. Secondary aim was to implement OntoPharma in a hospital setting. METHODS: A four-step process was proposed. (1) Defining the ontology domain. The ontology scope was the medication domain. An advisory board selected four use cases: maximum dosage alert, drug-drug interaction checker, renal failure adjustment, and drug allergy checker. (2) Implementing the ontology in a formal representation. The implementation was conducted by Medical Informatics specialists and Clinical Pharmacists using Protégé-OWL. (3) Developing an ontology-driven alert module. Computerised Physician Order Entry (CPOE) integration was performed through a REST API. SPARQL was used to query ontologies. (4) Implementing OntoPharma in a hospital setting. Alerts generated between July 2020/ November 2021 were analysed. RESULTS: The three ontologies developed included 34,938 classes, 16,672 individuals and 82 properties. The domains addressed by ontologies were identification data of medicinal products, appropriateness drug data, and local concepts from CPOE. When a medication prescribing error is identified an alert is shown. OntoPharma generated 823 alerts in 1046 patients. 401 (48.7%) of them were accepted. CONCLUSIONS: OntoPharma is an ontology based CDSS implemented in clinical practice which generates alerts when a prescribing medication error is identified. To gain user acceptance OntoPharma has been designed and developed by a multidisciplinary team. Compared to CDSS based on relational databases, OntoPharma represents medication knowledge in a more intuitive, extensible and maintainable manner.
